Employment for All

Two Conferences about Employment in Iceland

Folk - margbreytileikiTwo Nordic conferences were held in Reykjavik in the beginning of November 2009 under the name “Employment for All”. The conferences were organized by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Security in Iceland.

The first one, “The Effects of Employment on the Health and Quality of Life of the Elderly” focused on getting older in a new era. During the conference it became clear that times are changing. Seniors have to become more active in the labour market in the future, otherwise the welfare system will have difficulties with growing groups of elderly people and smaller groups of younger generations in the labour market.

The second conference, “The Capacity to Avoid Incapacity”, focused on the situation of people with disability pensions and the young people. During the conference it became clear that Iceland is the OECD-country which has the highest percentage of people receiving work disability pension that are also active participants in the labour market. It is important that governments do what they can to support employment through special labour measures financed by the state. The countries have to take good care of the young people in the labour market.
